Plot
Shuli calls Haiji out over the laundry. His shirt is inside out again and his socks never made it into the machine, which she takes as proof he could not have survived without her. She floats the idea that a wife might do him some good. Haiji chokes on his drink after hearing that. Then the doorbell rang. A blonde woman steps out of a limousine at the gate and announces she has waited six whole months, so today is the day the doctor starts dating her. Chiwako fills the others in about the woman. That was Lady Elenore Lee Ormalia, third daughter of the Duke of Ormalia, treated by Haiji three years ago and back every six months since for follow ups. The crush has been there the whole time. In the basement checkup room she starts undressing before he can stop her, purely because his reaction is funny is what she says. The exam clears her. Good health, no relapse risk, no reason to come back. She takes that as her opening and asks again to date. He refuses again. The refusal breaks something loose. She insists she is not healthy at all, that thinking about him squeezes her chest like a vice, and the chapter drops into her past. Numb limbs whenever she felt anything strongly. Doctor after doctor with no answers, psychotropic drugs, side effects, years of it. Haiji showed up looking dumber than any of them and got zapped repeatedly for his trouble while he leaned in to keep looking. Transient autonomic dysfunction, Haiji said. So she proposes, out loud, marriage included. Elenore offers to wait on him hand and foot, to which Shuli hears as a threat. Haiji ends it himself. No dating, no marriage. A lover would be a hindrance to the Under Doctor and to the patients only he can reach, and she was one of them once. The chapter ends with the limousine pulls away. Chiwako doubts she will stay gone forever, but Shuli is relieved for now.
